In today’s Apple earnings call, a number not related to record breaking profits, revenue, Mac sales nor iPods. It was the number of 250k iPhones sold with the intention of unlocking. How do they come up with these numbers, I am not sure, but the market is asking for something. Will Apple listen like they did with the SDK. In this case, it is not only up to them, but AT&T has to agree as well, since they signed a 5 year exclusive(stupid move) for the US market. Unless Jobs’s added a really sneaky clause in the contract that would require to unlock the iPhone if certain levels of unlocking are reached. Why else would Apple be announcing that they are not going to obtain the extra money from At&t two year agreement? (Well it could be so that investors can better do earnings predictions, but I’d like to think they are doing it just as they did with the DRM letter earlier this year).
