$100 Laptop for just $400

Posted by Jonathan Tarud on October 08, 2007

The OLPC(one laptop per child) program which has generated enough buzz to last them a couple of more years is having a sale for US residents: Buy one for you, and a second one is sent to some kid. It costs $400 to do this, and it is tax deductible. David Pogue from NYT has a review and video on it. If it was a bit cheaper I would buy one. It is priced at the same price of an iPhone. The only difference is that it is really, really open. This will be the favorite geek toy, this upcoming christmas.

I just bought a Rainbow!

Posted by Jonathan Tarud on October 04, 2007

I just pre-ordered Radiohead’s latest controversial album (Rainbow) for just 1.45 pounds. I am not a cheap bastard! I went to iTunes and checked my library and found I had only three of their previous songs. Therefore I decided to pay to actually see if I like them. That comes out to roughly $0.25 cents per song….more or less what eMusic charges for an indy group(which they are now, since they are lable-less).

Michael Arrington has a cool report on music and it’s future.

Making a frozen frappuccino

Posted by Jonathan Tarud on October 04, 2007

How to make a frappuccino:

Ingredients

3/4 cup double-strength coffee, cold
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 cup low-fat milk
2 cups ice

Steps:
Make double-strength coffee by brewing with twice the coffee required by your coffee maker: That should be 2 tablespoons of ground coffee per each cup of coffee. Chill before using.
To make drink, combine all ingredients in a blender and blend on high speed until ice is crushed and drink is smooth. Pour into two 16-ounce glasses, and serve with a straw.

CARAMEL:
For this version, add 3 tablespoons of caramel topping to the original recipe and prepare as described. Top each glass with whipped cream and drizzle additional caramel over the whipped cream.

MOCHA:
For this version, add 3 tablespoons Hershey’s chocolate syrup to the original recipe and prepare as described. Top each glass with whipped cream, if desired.

Report: 10 percent of September iPhones sold to unlocking teams

Posted by Jonathan Tarud on October 04, 2007

Gene Munster on sales of unlocked iPhones.

Judging from our checks, as much as 10 percent of the iPhones sold in September were purchased with the intention to be resold unlocked.

I don’t really trust the guy, but he is making a point. Apple has to open up if it really wants to take over a solid chunk of the wireless business(far beyond their 10 mill estimates).

iPhone Software strategy tied to Leopard?

Posted by Jonathan Tarud on October 03, 2007

As new evidence from Leopard surfaces, it appears that the notes app will sync with the Mail.app included notes.

But why is this so interesting? I have believe that we won’t see any Earth shattering updates to the iPhone’s OS until Leopard comes out. In theory, they use the same code base. Therefore I believe that Apple is waiting for Leopard to come out to the wild and stabilize, then update the iPhone to the new OS, subsequently releasing the true iPhone SDK. Anytime before that, would be really bad. The iPhone will be open on or before Macworld 08 in January.

Zune 2: Better, but still not the best

Posted by Jonathan Tarud on October 03, 2007

So the second gen Zunes are out. They are finally using WiFi for something slightly more useful(syncing), although the jury is still out on performance. Regarding the “social” feature (sharing a song, playable up to three times) remains unchanged and still crippled with DRM. John Gruber has a better post on this.

Interesting to note is the new ZunePad, which I remain skeptical about till I get my filthy hands on it. Going back to what works: the iPod click wheel seemed obvious since there is little you can do with it, thus making it a: “wow, that’s easy!”. With a free spaced touch-pad, you would actually have to think! Who wants that while listening to music…lol.

I got to admit the interface does look cool. Check out the video at Gizmodo. Launch date Nov 13.

Fuel cells cool?!?

Posted by Jonathan Tarud on October 03, 2007

Crunchgear report on fuel cells(nothing we didn’t already know). Although it would be cool, most of these will be rendered useless once the FAA or TSA start to doubt the safety of them.

Just like cellphones, which aren’t bad for planes…they just turn people into obnoxious bastards while the chat away, thus their ban.

v-moda Vibe Dou really trying to seduce me

Posted by Jonathan Tarud on October 02, 2007

I’ve been a Shure user for roughly three years now and was almost seduced by the first version of the v-moda Vibe Dou in ear monitors for the iPhone when I went to get the Shure iPhone adapter for my earphones. I heard bad comments on the microphone and opted to buy the Shure adapter. With a new version out and looking pretty cool it makes me wonder…

Go Radiohead!!!

Posted by Jonathan Tarud on October 02, 2007

By now most of you must have heard that the band Radiohead decided to offer two versions of their upcoming album: physical boxset and digital version. What’s controversial about all this is that they decided to go with “what is it worth to you” approach…basically you pay what you want! This must be a mayor blow to all those “inovative” executive who though Ringles were simply great($7 box a pop).

Now message for Apple, AmazonMP3, Walmart and all the music labels: STOP charging ridiculous prices for DRM crippled music!!!!

Take that Metalica!
