Hosting gone bad: EVERYWHERE!!!

Signs of economic recession are hitting everywhere….even hosting services. It’s been a tough year for hosting provider. A lot of them have suffered from bad PR in different areas:

Rackspace: If last year’s catastrophe wasn’t enough, another one of Rackspace big named customer(37signals) suffered a two hour outage because of a bad load balancer.

UPDATE: Tumblr has had trouble with Rackspace too. They really hate them.

Joyent: Popular for their reliable Accelerators, they experienced downtime in two of their hosted products during the better half of last week due to a ZFS bug.

Dreamhost: First they wine about Rails, instead of actually helping out the community. Then they have the balls to overcharge customers during 2007-08 and send them an apology with a fatter than usual Homer Simpson….this is one of those lines which should never be crossed.

MediaTemple: The’ve had sporadic databases and backup issues in their grid server(gs). Max also had this same error right after the 50leaves post (his was promptly resolved). It good that they are going to retire (gs) soon and upgrade to their new cluster server (cs).

Network Solutions: They are reportedly using sneaky methods to lock domains purchase after people search for availability.

As I’ve said before, social media has put new requirements on web hosts and customers aren’t taking any prisoners. Please let me know in the comments if there are any that I’ve missed.

I have both a (gs) and a (dv) from mediatemple. icecrums is run on (gs). They really aren’t a bad company. Of the three I’ve hosted in, they are the best. You’re site seems to be getting a lot of load, you might want to consider caching to speed things up.

One word to solve your problems: Slicehost. I’ve used MT and Joyent, switched out of frustration and haven’t looked back.

I’ve heard great things about slicehost(in rails blogs) but have never really met anyone who uses it. They could have a $10 light version(like mt’s light gs).
