AT&T is showing real signs of being more open with their new “bring your phone, just buy the sim card” plan which no longer requires a long term commitment (after an aplogy). This is a huge step in US wireless industry, and just in time for the wireless spectrum auction, which has become a “openness parade“. In order to be a player, you need to be open.
Could this eventually lead to iPhone purchases without long term contracts and unlocking capabilities? I seriously doubt it since the iPhone’s data plan represents a new revenue sources for Ma Bell(something they’ve been dying to find for a while).
At this time, the only thing that will force Apple or AT&T to actually give out unlocking codes will be a court order.
