My Guess: SDK on Tuesday, but NO Consumer Update

The end of February is imminent and most importantly iPhone update is right around the corner(or delayed a couple of weeks). So instead of repeating what every one is saying, let me list a couple of things we should expect.

-The release will be geared towards developers: don’t expect iTunes prompting you to upgrade your iPhone anytime soon. Instead we will see a developer release since it doesn’t make sense on releasing the new version with little or no software available. Developers have had no time to develop with a stable SDK(little time if you got an invite from Apple).

-Premier and Select ADC members only: Apple’s unreleased software products(developer build, prerelease OS, beta tools) are usually only available to their paying developers and not the free account holders. It makes sense to use the iPhone SDK to drive membership subscriptions. Besides, anyone serious about developing for the iPhone should be able to dish out the $499 for a Select membership.

-Software availability: We will see a couple of stupid developers announcing “iPhone Compatible” or something like that, but more likely than not, it will be pure garbage. Good developers allow their application to brew and offer stable and feature complete apps.

-WWDC 2008: The keynote can serve as a show and tell of unique apps and be the release for the new iPhone/touch “platform” for consumers.

-Pricing: Expect some or most developers to include iPhone beta versions of their apps to current customers. Discounts and bundles will be common place as an edge to make app sales. Hopefully they won’t give them for free and wreck the market.

-iPhone social: Michael Arrington on and iPhone centric social network. I think it’s safe to assume we will have a few of these and MMOs.

Hopefully: Cut and paste!!! Is this too much to ask for? It would definitely make me and many others more productive on an iPhone.
